The Rose and I - VR!

For those of you who are interested in VR, I'm excited to announce that a VR piece I directed is going to be released to the world soon! Penrose, the production company that produced it, will be releasing it on a "pay what you want" basis. Details on how to download will come in my next post.

We spent a few months crafting the piece, and collaborated with 19 artist from all different disciplines. We have an original song composed by Ryan Shore, production design by Nick Sung, sound design by Alex Wilmer, and work from a whole host of other talented folks that contributed to the piece. There's a lot of excitement around this new tech, and we were all eager to get our hands dirty and play with the medium.

Here is a board I did for the short, as well as the beautiful color script Nick put together. Bear in mind that these don't do the piece justice. To get the full effect, you have to see it in VR!

Mini Noir

Here are a couple of photographs I took for an art show called: "Mini Noir". The prompt was to submit a single storyboard that evoked the Film Noir genre. Instead of drawing, I thought it would be more fun to take some photographs. I gathered up a few friends, went out onto San Francisco's Embarcaderro and started shooting... photographs, that is.

Gesture Book

Louie and I have been working on putting a "How to" gesture drawing book together. We're still in early stages, but we're very excited about it. It's based on the 7 topics I always talk about: Line of Action, Shape, Silhouette, Space, Exaggeration, Extrapolation, and Story.

Since I haven't posted any drawings in a while, I thought I'd post the first chapter of the book.

Creative Synthesis

Martin Luther King Jr is one of my favorite thinkers.

His book "Strength to Love" is one of my favorite books.

And this is one of my favorite passages from his sermon 'A tough mind and a tender heart':

A French Philosopher once said: “No man is so strong unless he bears within his character antitheses strongly marked”. The strong man is the man who can hold in a living blend strongly marked opposites. Very seldom do men achieve this balance of opposites. The idealists are not usually realistic, and the realists are not usually idealistic. The militant are not usually passive, and the passive are not usually militant. The humble are very seldom self-assertive and the self-assertive are rarely humble. But life at its best is a creative synthesis. It is the bringing together of opposites into fruitful harmony. As the philosopher Hegel said, “truth is found neither in the thesis nor the antithesis, but in an emergent synthesis which reconciles the two.”

This quote articulates the struggle of life beautifully, and I believe that what Mr. King said about the tension in man is also true of drawing:

A strong drawing is one that bears within it’s character the two antitheses of draftsmanship and vitality.

Figure drawing emphasizes observation, anatomy, and representation - Draftsmanship.

Gesture drawing emphasizes interpretation, feeling, and improvisation - Vitality.

It is the combination of these two skill sets- the 'creative synthesis' - that drawing is at it's best.

Live with a tough mind and a tender heart.

Draw with solid draftsmanship and spontaneous vitality.

Superman on the Street

Last weekend, a few friends and I competed in a Two Day Film Competition. The rules were:

1) Must use the line: "Emeryville is lovely in the Autumn"

2) Must include an annoying use of product placement

3) Must be in your assigned genre (mockumentary or super hero)
